Doreen Drennan, Artist, impressionist painter of the Burren and the Wild Atlantic Way for over 30 years.
Doreen was born on Achill Island and grew up by the sea and spent her childhood playing in the rockpools and on the sandy beaches of the Atlantic. She often draws on these elements, recapturing idyllic days spent languishing on the sanddunes ,and transferring the memories into her paintings.
Doreen still resides by the Wild Atlantic. Her studio , which is open to visitors ,is set in a scenic location, on the edge of the Burren and with views of the world famous Cliffs of Moher.
The studio is surrounded by a feature garden, which is a work in progress, comprising a walled garden with raised stone beds, and a riverwalk garden set around an old stone bridge dating back to 1850.
Doreen,s preferred medium is oil paint, she loves to immerse her senses in the the texture, the pliable feel , the smell of the paint , which she then transfers onto the canvas , using brush and knife to create the challenging shapes and images which combine to portray the exquisite colours of the West of Ireland.
Doreen,s subjects are the atmospheric skies , the wildness of the Atlantic, and the ruggedness of the landscape of the West of Ireland .The challenge to paint the landscape and capture the fleeting light which attracted so many famous artists to the West of Ireland in the past.
Doreen paints outdoors and in her studio in Ardeamush, Lisdoonvarna. When working outdoors she paints fast and loose to catch the everchanging light, work is then finished in the studio.
Her garden and the flowers she grows are more of her favourite subjects , when something captures her eye she just HAS to paint it.
Doreen also paints from memory and imagination when the wild weather of the West does not permit an easel to stand !!
